Fun Fact Friday
In this complicated world, with newfangled technology; we honour one of our most basic, yet essential tools in this week’s Fun Fact Friday!
The pen.
1. The average pen can write approximately 45,000 words
2. Hungarian journalist Laszio Biro invented the ballpoint pen
3. The first patent for the biro pen belonged to John Loud in 1888
4. Ballpoint pens work whereby a small rotating ball made of brass, tungsten carbide or steel disperses ink from the pressure when you write
5. In 1963 the ‘Hi-Liter’, the water-based marker that emitted an eye-catching translucent ink; was developed in Massachusetts by Carter’s Ink (also an important tool for accountants!)
6. A ‘Space Pen’ uses pressurised ink cartridges meaning that it can write underwater, in varying temperatures, at zero gravity and on wet and greasy paper (we could use one of these with some of the receipts that are handed in…)
There you have it, the humble, but essential, pen.
