Fun Fact Friday

Some interesting titbits about autumn.

1. Meteorological autumn begins on September 1st

2. Trees shed their leaves in preparation for winter, in the autumn. This is because during winter there isn’t enough light for photosynthesis to occur. Photosynthesis is the way in which plants make food, so as the days shorten throughout autumn, the trees begin to close down their food production systems

3. Chlorophyll is the chemical which makes tree leaves green and as it declines other chemicals become more prominent in the leaves.

4. The chemicals responsible for the vibrant ambers, reds and yellows of autumn are types of Flavonoids, Carotenoids and Anthocyanins

Autumn is also a fantastic time to submit your tax return early – just as the nights are drawing in, but before the madness of Christmas (yes, I said it).
