Fun Fact Friday

Fun Fact Friday is all about the giraffe!

1. They are the tallest animal in the world

2. Every giraffe has a coat made up of a unique pattern of spots

3. The giraffe’s long neck is useful for many things: reaching the leaves of tall trees, fighting opponents, and the height added by the neck means they can easily spot predators

4. They have the same number of teeth as humans (32), but these are only on the bottom jaw

5. Their tongues are bluish in colour (to combat sunburn) and are on average, 50 – 53cm in length

Thinking of sticking your neck out, and joining a unique accountancy practice? (It’s been a while since we had a good hook line!)

Call or email us today, and find out why we are able to stick our tongues out at our competition…*groan*

Have a great weekend!

Fun Fact Friday

Some interesting titbits about autumn.

1. Meteorological autumn begins on September 1st

2. Trees shed their leaves in preparation for winter, in the autumn. This is because during winter there isn’t enough light for photosynthesis to occur. Photosynthesis is the way in which plants make food, so as the days shorten throughout autumn, the trees begin to close down their food production systems

3. Chlorophyll is the chemical which makes tree leaves green and as it declines other chemicals become more prominent in the leaves.

4. The chemicals responsible for the vibrant ambers, reds and yellows of autumn are types of Flavonoids, Carotenoids and Anthocyanins

Autumn is also a fantastic time to submit your tax return early – just as the nights are drawing in, but before the madness of Christmas (yes, I said it).

Talk to us today, if you’re looking to cross your tax return off of your 2019 list and enjoy January 2020!

Fun Fact Friday: Bridges

Fun Fact Friday!

In honour of the new bridge that will span the Clyde between Renfrew and Yoker, as part of the Clyde Waterfront & Renfrew Riverside; this week’s fun facts are all about Scottish bridges.

– Clachan bridge was built in 1792. It was designed by John Stevenson, whose family founded Oban, and the plans were revised by Robert Mylne

– The Brig ‘O Doon bridge has been immortalised in Robert Burn’s poem ‘Tam O’Shanter’

– The Brig ‘O Doon bridge also features on some Scottish £5 notes – Finally, the same bridge also lends its name to the 1954 film Brigadoon (this bridge is more famous than some influencers!)

– At the moment, there are only 21 bridges that span the River Clyde (not many for a river of its length)

– The Forth Road Bridge was once famous for requiring to be repainted endlessly.

Its current top coat should last until 2031 Looking to bridge the gap between you and your accountant? Look no further! We’re here to work with you, not just for you.

Ask the Accountant

This week’s Ask the Accountant question is,

“How did you become a Chartered Accountant?”

It all began when Chris left school at 16; his mum agreed he could have 6 months off, then it was time to get a job (other than his paper round!).

The Job Centre signed Chris up on to a Youth Training Scheme (also known as YTS) and placed him to work in Quarrier’s finance office.

It turned out that Chris was rather good at finance. A successful YTS story, he stayed at the charity for 10 years; during which time he decided he’d like to be an accountant.

He knew that university wasn’t for him, so he undertook the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) exams via self-funding and determination.

The rest, as they say, is history!

Having been a member of the association and meeting their CPD requirements for more than 5 continuous years, Chris is now a Fellow of ACCA. Well done – it was obviously fate.

It Just Wouldn’t Be Friday Without…

Fun Fact Friday! This week is all about primary school. We’re pretty sure the wind yesterday was caused by the thousands of parents, breathing a sigh of relief!

Here goes:

1. The Phumachangtang primary school in Tibet, is thought to be the highest school in the world.

2. 3. There’s a school in the Philippines that is made entirely of recycled plastic bottles.

3. In a remote area of Colombia, kids have to travel to school on a zip-line. Seriously!

4. Summer holidays in Chile begin mid-December and end in early March. (nightmare!)

5. Kids in Japan are the most independent school-goers. They travel to school alone (sometimes covering a few miles) and clean their own classrooms.

With the kids in Scotland mostly returned to school, what better time could there be to visit your local, wonderful, accountant?

To make an appointment simply call 0141 889 1161, mail info@caas.org.uk; or complete the contact form on this website – it’s that easy!

C Allan & Son Client Showcase

Our client showcase this week is something a bit different from what we’ve previously shown. Let us introduce the wonderful charity, Greyhound Awareness League (GAL)

We’ve been working for GAL for the past 6 years (since we created the business actually), and even after all this time, we are completely bowled over by the generosity shown by and to the charity.

The Greyhound Awareness League (GAL) rescues and then rehomes greyhounds and lurchers throughout Scotland.

GAL started in 1998 and remains an unaffiliated charity, it’s still run entirely by volunteers.

The effort from the volunteers to fundraise, foster and rehome the hounds means that the dogs have a very bright future.

Check out their Facebook page, or website www.gal.org.uk to see dogs that are available for rehoming now.

Fun Fact Friday

Brought to you today, with facts about summer:

Fun Fact Friday: facts about summer!

1. The last day of summer is September 20th (it just feels sooner, here in Scotland)

2. The Eiffel Tower, Paris, actually grows during summer. Due to the iron expanding, the tower grows about 6 inches

3. In the past, TV consisted of only reruns during the summer months. Due to the belief that everyone was outside enjoying the weather

4. The month of June is named after the Roman goddess Juno

5. Roman general Marc Antony named the month of July after Julius Caesar

6. August was named after Julius Caesar’s nephew. He had received the title of “Augustus” which means “reverend”

7. The “dog days of summer” refer to the dates from July 3rd to August 11th. They are named so after the Sirius the Dog Star. This star is located in the constellation of Canis Major

Found a little place of loveliness

We took a day off yesterday, to kick about Glasgow as tourists. The weather was dreich! However, we found a lovely cafe to take shelter in.

Unity Enterprise operates the Spoon Cafe in the Trongate. These are no ordinary cafes; they are actually social enterprises!

Unity offers a good range of fresh food, but more than this they provide free food and hot drinks and also informal support to people in Glasgow City Centre who are affected by homelessness or poverty.

The food was delicious, service was friendly and prompt and the prices were very reasonable for being located in the city centre.

Spoon operates a pay it forward policy too, which means you can round up your bill and the extra money helps someone who needs it. Just lovely.

If you’re in the Trongate, we’d highly recommend.
