Fun Fact Friday

Fun Fact Friday, all you ever wanted to know about sunrises!

-Sunrise is actually an illusion, because the sun never goes away – it is the earth that moves. When the earth rotates towards the East, the sun appears and seems to rise

– Sunlight is white, refraction from water and gas molecules causes the white light to break down into the colours we see

– Why do we mostly see red, orange and yellow? This is due to these colours having the longest wavelength

– Those places with less air pollutants have more intense sunrises (and sunsets) due to less scattering of the white sunlight

– Partial cloud can make an excellent amplifier of a sunrise, this is because the cloud reflects the first light of the sun

C Allan & Son Accountancy Services Turn 7!

We are 7 today!

It seems like we started the company years ago, but also just yesterday.

Thank you to all of our clients, those in the past and especially, our current ones. Without you guys we have nothing.

We’re on the slow burn – growing continually each week, and ensuring that our service never changes.

It’s acceptable to have cake on your businesses birthday, right?!

Do You Wanna…

…build a snowman?

No, wait; that’s not right. Ahem, let’s try that again!

Do you wanna submit your tax return early?

Enjoy your festive break, safe in the knowledge that you don’t need to rush around in January, by being one of those super-duper organised folks.

We’ve already got a significant number of clients who can laugh as heartily as Santa, because they’ve submitted their return to HMRC already.

Give us a call on 0141 816 9750 or email info@caas.org.uk

Our Christmas Donation

Every year, we donate to a charity of our choice. The only stipulation that we have, is that the charity must be from Renfrewshire.

This year, we’ve broken our own rule and donated to two very worthwhile charities, instead of one. We found it too hard to decide between them!

The first charity is Finding Your Feet Amputee Charity, who do magnificent work in supporting families affected by amputation or limb absence; and the second is the Renfrewshire Christmas Toy Bank who ensure those children who might not receive presents on Christmas, get something to make them smile.

Thanks to everyone who uses our services and allows us to give something back. We couldn’t do it without you!

Ask the Accountant!

If you’re new to our Accountancy blog; welcome!

We do things a bit differently to other accountants – no one cares about tax updates or financial news until it affects them directly, and especially nobody wants to hear these updates from a second source. So, we try to keep accountancy lighthearted.

With that in mind, please read our feature called ‘Ask the Accountant’.

Every week we post a different question that we’ve had from people throughout the years.

This week it’s a controversial question (perhaps) – who are HMRC?

It’s a good one because they dictate who pays tax, when you pay tax and how much you need to pay.

Let’s dive in, shall we?

To begin HMRC stands for Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs. HMRC essentially collect money from residents of the United Kingdom. This money pays for public services throughout the UK, and also provides welfare benefits for those who need them.

HMRC is a non-ministerial Department established by the Commissioners for Revenue and Customs Act (CRCA) 2005 – it replaced the Inland Revenue and Custom and Excise. HMRC must report to Parliament via a Treasury Minister.

HMRC are responsible for the following:

– Corporation Tax
– Income Tax
– Inheritance Tax
– Capital Gains Tax
– Environmental taxes climate change and aggregates levy and landfill tax
– Insurance Premium Tax
– Stamp, Land and Petroleum Revenue Taxes
– Value Added Tax (VAT), including import VAT
– Customs duty
– Excise duties
– Trade Statistics
– National Insurance
– Tax Credits
– Child Benefit
– Enforcement of the National Minimum Wage
– Recovery of Student Loan repayments

HMRC State that they have 3 objectives:

1. to collect revenue due and police avoidance and evasion
2. transform tax and payments for our customers
3.design and deliver a professional, efficient and engaged organisation

There is much, much more on the gov.uk website if you want to get even geekier. Or, if you can’t sleep at night…

Be sure to visit back next week for the lowdown on some other burning accounting question!

This week’s client showcase…

it’s the turn of Abbey Mill Fitness Club & Personal Training Studio.

The first thing you need to know about the gym at Abbey Mill Fitness Club is that Stephen is extremely approachable if you want assistance; but if you’re the kind to just get on with your own training, head down, tunes on etc. that’s supported too.

We challenge you to find a more relaxed and inclusive gym. Plus, there’s no contract, you just pay each month.

There are also joint memberships available, which costs just £38.50 per month. An absolute bargain!

This isn’t just a gym; there’s also the running club, personal training and Workout with Cheryl.

Join now and beat the January crowds – you won’t regret it.

Fun Fact Friday!

Everyone knows someone who’s currently got it, so today’s Fun Fact Friday is all about the common cold!

1. Most adults catch two to four colds per year, children can easily get six to 10; hence all those snotty-nosed weans!

2. More than 200 viruses are responsible for the cold. The most common are called human rhinoviruses (HRV)

3. There are around 100 known subtypes of HRV, meaning that a vaccine cannot be made (and there is no cure for the common cold)

4. Rhinoviruses survive for three hours outside of the body, and can sometimes live for up to 48 hours on touchable surfaces, including everything from door handles to light switches and everything in between!

5. A single cold virus can have 16 million offspring within the course of a day (boak), so cover your mouth and wash those hands

Did those numbers hurt your head? Do your business numbers leave you feeling as mince as when you have the cold?

Fear not, we have just the tonic – us!

From bookkeeping through to limited company accounts, we do it all.

What’s more? We offer 12 monthly payment plans, to make it that bit easier to get your accounts in good health.

For the common cold, we swear by a good hot toddy…or just the whisky in it (always drink responsibly!).

We Aren’t Looking for SEO

We have been made aware that our details have been uploaded to the website Bark, stating that we are looking for a freelancer to undertake SEO for us.

This lead is entirely false. We are not looking for SEO from an outside company, it is all done in-house.

We apologise to the freelancers that have contacted, but can only state that we have never given our details to Bark.

It is extremely distressing to know that small business owners like us are gearing up to speak to us, in the belief that they will hopefully gain work out of it. We know the time it takes to prepare a pitch and the nerves you feel prior to speaking to a potential client.

We hope this information helps people who may be considering buying leads from companies like this.

Fun Fact Friday

In a nod to Michelle undertaking a diploma in digital marketing, here are some facts about said level of qualification.

1. The word diploma comes originally from Greek, meaning double-folded paper

2. Harvard College is responsible for starting the tradition of awarding diplomas

3. Original diplomas were made from thin sheepskin because paper-making was an arduous process

4. Schools needed to hire a calligrapher to write up the necessary Latin inscription on parchment (animal skin) paper

5. The first woman to receive a diploma was Catherine Elizabeth Brewer Benson from Wesleyan College (formally known as Georgia Female College) in 1840

And there you have it, things you may not have known about the diploma!

Do you find bookkeeping as arduous as paper-making was? It needn’t be a task akin to further education.

Call us and we’ll provide a quote to undertake your bookkeeping, every fortnight, month or quarter – whatever works for you.

As ever, we are contactable via telephone 0141 816 9750 or email info@caas.org.uk.

Have a great weekend!
